A Song of Fall
小林 柳

Colors of the autumn leaves
Are now changing little by little.
There flash burning red, joyful yellow,
And green, which is sad to see summer gone.

Echoing far up in the sky
Is chattering of boys and girls.
Sadness melts in the air with a sigh,
Feeding the leaves to shine and fall.

Thousands of words to admire,
Thousands of words of despair,
All those words are only words.
Even the greatest of human creation can never be more beautiful
Than a shadow of a thin leaf, waving on a white wall.

Sunk deep in his melancholy, a man is walking down a road.
His face is down to see the ground, looking for a forgotten verse.
He will soon find a leaf, fallen dead on black concrete.
When he lifts up his eyes, there he will see leaves dance;
With farewell to the memories,
To the winter they descend the stairs.
